Apport de la modalité tactile sur les habiletés numériques de base et le dénombrement dans le cadre de la dyspraxie visuospatiale : étude de cas

Abstract : Various studies highlight the presence of mathematical disorders in visuospatial dyspraxia. These digital difficulties are related to a spatial representation deficit, which goes through the visual channel. The main aim of our study was to compare basic digital skills and counting by two modalities (visual and tactile) among three groups (dyspraxic, dyscalculic, all-comers). Our secondary aims were to determine if the tactile sense enables the dyspraxic subject to acquire better mathematical performance, to determine which items were most sensitive to modality changes, and finally to verify the child’s responses to standardized mathematical tests.
To answer these questions, three children were assessed with three tests - estimation, number line, counting - each passed in the two modalities. Some tests come from standardized tests, others were created to match them, according to the definitions of each digital skill.
Our results showed that all children’s preferential modality is the visual one, in these three digital skills. The dyspraxic child is the most comfortable with the tactile modality, while the dyscalculic child is the one who has the most difficulties with it. Moreover, the dyspraxic child shows better tactile performance on the number line than on other skills. Finally, this work allowed to study a rarely used mdoality, which could be an aid for dyspraxic children, and which could be a new research track to be exploited in speech therapy.
