Impact d’une alimentation enrichie en lipides sur les paramètres biologiques de l’adulte du genre Trichogramma

Abstract : The use of lipids in insect rearing has been underestimated. Nevertheless, some insects are unable to synthesize lipids de novo: it is true for a large number of Hymenoptera parasitoids. Lipid reserves are essentials by fueling both ovigenesis and somatic functions. By host-feeding, females are able to use their host to obtain essential nutrients, including lipids which can be allocated for reproduction. However, the reproductive host-feeding gain is limited by the small quantity of lipids obtain by female during host-feeding. By supplementing parasitoid diet with lipids, it will theoretically possible to stimulate the production of eggs by females, thus their capacity to parasitize host eggs. Trichogramma pretiosum females have been feeding continuously a diet supplemented with a ratio of 90:10% honey to plant oil with a fatty acids profile similar to the host Ephesia kuehniella, by thermal process (water bath at 70 °C). Females fed with the lipid-rich diet have laid significantly more eggs (+10% in 3 days) than females fed honey-only. However, longevity was negatively affected (- 40%) by the addition of plant oil when parasitoids were allowed to feed on the mixture continuously. This would suggest that olive oil becomes toxic to T. pretiosum. Finally, neither flight performance nor quality of the offspring have been adversely affected. These results reveal the potential of a lipid-rich diet to increase lipids allocation into reproduction. Further research into lipid supplementation needs to be done to highlight which fatty acids are responsible by an increase in parasitism. The use of a lipid-rich diet for insect rearing could be a true financial benefit for manufacturers which rear parasitoids of the genus Trichogramma.
