État des lieux des plages horaires des médecins urgentistes en France en 2019

Abstract : Introduction. Since many years, we observe an increase of the workload in emergency department (ED). This change invites to reflects on the adequacy of work’s rhythms of emergency physicians (EP) with their activity. In this context, we propose an inventory of EP duty hours in France in 2019 with an assessment of the quality of life according to the worked hours. Method. This is a descriptive epidemiological study. A survey has been sent to the head of the ED of public and private non-profit establishments, with continuous activity, in France over the period from July 10 to September 6, 2020. The survey focused on the ED demography and activity, as well as quality of life at work. Results. Among the 473 ED meeting the inclusion criteria, 104 responded to the survey. Emergency physicians mainly work during 10 continuous hours. This schedule represents 46% of the total schedules run by EP in France during 2019. 24-hours schedules dominate in low ED attendance while 10-hours schedules are essential in high attendance centers. Duty hours duration, as an independent factor, does not seem to influence EP’s quality of life at work, however this evaluation isn’t exhaustive in our study. Conclusion. In France in 2019, emergency physicians mainly work during 10 continuous hours. There is no significant variability in the quality of life at work depending on the length of time schedules worked.
