En situation de momentum psychologique d’équipe positif, la contagion émotionnelle impacte-t-elle la performance lors d’une tâche de lancers francs en basket-ball ? Une étude exploratoire

Abstract : Background and objectives: emotional contagion plays a key role in team sports’ performance. Moreover, emotions are important in the positive team’s psychological momentum (TPM+). The aims of this study are to assess the effects of emotions displayed by a teammate, during a context of TPM+, on: 1) the emotions of the participants, 2) their expectations of performance at free-throw for their teammate (LFP) and for themselves (LFJ) and 3) their perceptions of TPM. Methods: seventy-eight women basketball players had to imagine taking part in a pair free-throw contest, on computer. During two sets, they watched their teammate’s (a confederate) ten shots without seeing the results and they imagined themselves shooting ten free-throws. Perceptions of TPM+ were triggered at the end of the first set. During the second set, the teammate displayed non-verbal behaviors linked with positive, negative or neutral emotions. After every video, the participants filled out in order: the LFP, their own emotions, the LFJ and their perception of TPM. Results and discussion: there is an effect of emotional contagion between the teammate and the participants. The display of positive emotions improved the LFP whereas the display of negative emotions highly decreased the LFP and the TPM. Positive and negative emotions felt by the participants predicted positively and negatively both variables. There is not impact of contagion on the LFJ. Although the virtual nature of the contest represents the main limit, the effects of the emotional contagion would probably be enhanced in a real context. It fosters future research. Conclusion: even when teams have positive momentum, it is fundamental that players learn to handle their negative emotions in order to prevent the decrease of their team’s performance and to spread positive emotions.
