Psychoéducation familiale : connaissances et attentes des aidants familiaux des patients souffrant de schizophrénie en Polynésie française

Abstract : Introduction: family psychoeducation is recommended in the management of schizophrenia, yet it is still little developed around the world. In French Polynesia, structured family psychoeducation is not part of the routine management of schizophrenia. The cultural context as well as the political will for public health suggest that such a program would have its place in the Polynesian psychiatric care system. Objective: to explore the knowledge and expectations in terms of psychoeducation of family caregivers of patients suffering from schizophrenia in French Polynesia. Method: We carried out a quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional observational study with family caregivers of patients suffering from schizophrenia in French Polynesia. Results: of the 63 family caregivers included in our study, 79% said they were ready to participate in a psychoeducational program. The most common expectations were "understanding the illness", "knowing how to behave in front of a patient", and "sharing one’s experience with other caregivers". The foreseen modalities were monthly sessions at the Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie française with information provided in both French and Tahitian. The caregiver’s level of knowledge of schizophrenia was not significantly correlated with their quality of life level. Conclusion: polynesian caregivers are largely in favor of family psychoeducation. The conditions seem ready for the establishment of such a program in French Polynesia and the use of existing techniques in the local language.
