Unintentional effects of biopesticides on biocontrol agents

Abstract : Agroecology deals with various issues such as the limitation of environmental pollution, by reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides. The use of biological control or the use of “natural” products such as essential oils can be considered as solutions. But, if implemented together, they should not cause side effects on non-target insects. That is why the identification of natural products’ unintentional effects on biocontrol agents is a key point in integrated pest management. The aim of this study is to identify the unintentional effects of ten essential oils (Basil, Coriander, Fennel, Green anise, Mugwort, Oregano, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sweet orange and Thyme), and one of their compound: 1.8 cineole; on the behaviour of three strains of the biocontrol agent Trichogramma Cacoeciae (micro-hymenoptera). Olfactometry experiments, manual, and automatic olfactometry videos observations have been conducted. The trichograms’ reactions towards essential oils odours were found to depend on the strain and the time of exposure. For all of the strains, three groups of essential oils have been identified. The attractive essential oils (Rosemary, Mugwort, and Fennel) are responsible for a decrease of their activity rate and their speed. Their movement sinuosity tends to increase. Repulsive oils set themselves apart by making their jump’s frequency increase as as their speed, as a possible escape behaviour. These results suggest that the use of an integrated pest management based on both essential oils and biocontrol agents must be deeply thought before implementation.
