Les violences obstétricales : conséquences sur l’estime de soi des femmes

Abstract : Introduction: Introduced in the public debate after the speak out of thousands of women, obstetric violence are defined by the Haut Conseil à l’Égalité entre les femmes et hommes as gestures, words, practices, behaviors exercised or omitted by one or more caregiver’s on patients during their gynecologic or obstetrical monitoring. Several studies show that school, marital and sexual violence affects victims’ self-esteem. In the perinatal spectrum, self-esteem is defined as parental ability’s feeling. When it’s good, the latter reduce the feeling of psychological distress in the three months following the delivery. Therefore, we studied the link between the pregnancy and delivery’s experience and the patient’s self-esteem during post-partum period. Materials and methods: First, a descriptive study have been done on women’s experience and self-esteem. Then, to evaluate the influence of women’s experience on their self-esteem a comparative study has been realized. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. It was distributed among volunteers’ women in several south region’s maternity. Results: Women who showed a lowest self-esteem in the post-partum period are those who were not satisfied by the consideration of their needs during the pregnancy (p=0,008) ; who had a bad global experience during delivery (p=0,002) ; who felt a lack of explanations during labor (p=0,005) ; who felt a lack of goodwill from the caregivers (p=0,005) ; who couldn’t express their consent (p=0,042) ; who felt infantilized (p=0,003). Conclusion: It’s mostly the caregivers’ lack of communication and availability witch affect women’s experience; accordingly women’s self-esteem during postpartum period without taking in consideration age, parity or life style.
