Le rôle de la sage-femme dans la prise en charge des causes de mortalité infantile entre 1870 et 1914 en France

Abstract : Midwives have always acted as essential people in the newborn care issue. In France from 1870 to 1914 political, scientifical, social and demographical changes have given the midwives a prominent place especially in the manage ment of the causes of child and maternal mortality, tackled issue in the thesis by Elisabeth Lyonnais. At the beginning of this period the child mortality ratio in France reached 170‰ and near to 115‰ on the eve of the Fisrt World War that is two generations later. The Journal des sages-femmes allows us to see the part they played with the children from birth up to their first year of life. In close collaboration with the doctors and the institutions for the protection of youth, the midwives were involved in the various means used to make child mortality decrease. They provided a leading role thanks to their vocational training, taking prevention measures, giving newborn care, taking action towards vaccination, and promoting breastfeeding.
