Traduction et adaptation en portugais de la BESTA, Batterie d’Evaluation Simplifiée des Troubles Aphasiques

Abstract : Introduction: in a globalised world, shaped by the sustained migratory flows therefore resulting into a constant movement of speakers and languages, the speech-language assessment of allophone and bilingual people by speech therapists who do not speak the same language is a major challenge. In an acute phase of stroke, appropriate tests are needed for the specific linguistic and cultural features of patients and for the demanding acute context. Only a few approved tools exist for French-speaking speech therapists to produce a quick and reliable assessment of the Portuguese language. Our aim is to elaborate a Portuguese version of the Batterie d’Evaluation Simplifiée des Troubles Aphasiques (Besta), developed in French in order to use in an acute phase of stroke. Materials and methods: a thorough method based on the International Test Commission (ITC) recommendations has been implemented with several steps and inspections (length, frequency, language and cultural criteria) for each item. Instructions, facilitation and distractors have been inspected on linguistic, speech and language criteria. To prevent bias and the idiosyncratic influence of translators, Portuguese-speaking experts and aphasiologists have been consulted. Decisions were made by consensus. Results: translations did not reveal any difficulty but two items meeting with Brazilian-Portuguese standards have been refused. Nine items have been replaced further to length checking and two for semantic reasons. Inconstancies on spelling regularity and on length have been accepted. Due to instructions and facilitation, lexical and syntactic modifications have been added. Discussion: through a method consistent with recommendations of linguistic customisation tests, we managed to get a localised version of Besta complying with psycholinguistic criteria and distinctive features of Portuguese language and culture. This new tool should therefore be approved and standardised within a Portuguese-first language population.
