Familiarisation de l’interlocuteur à la parole dysarthrique : élaboration d’un programme

Abstract : A listener’s perception of a dysarthric patient’s speech can be improved if the listener is familiarized to the patient’s speech. The aim of this study is to submit a familiarization program to the main listeners of dysarthric patients, in order to evaluate its efficacy and clinical feasibility. The program comprised 6 text-reading sessions carried out by the patient and listener together, over a 2-week period. The patient’s intelligibility and the listener’s perception were assessed before and after familiarization. Results show a qualitative and quantitative improvement of the listener’s perception of the patient’s speech after familiarization, although the results are non-significant. The clinical program, while constraining, is promising and very well-received by the listeners. This study emphasizes the limits to intelligibility assessments, yet the encouraging results of the program confirm the importance of including listeners in the treatment of dysarthria. Complementary clinical studies will be necessary to identify a familiarization program which can be included in the therapy.
