Plainte cognitive des patientes ayant eu un cancer du sein : intérêts d’un atelier de remédiation cognitive

Abstract : Breast cancer is the most common and deadliest in women, it is a major public health concern. Among treatment side effects, cancer-related cognitive impairments (CRCIs)-commonly known as chemobrain or chemfog- rarely mentioned to patients, are yet the cause of cognitive complaints, an alteration in quality of life, and a barrier in going back to work. The support offered to these women is still incomplete. Therefore, we assumed that patients would be interested and motivated to take part in a cognitive remediation workshop. This care should then allow them to observe the decline in their cognitive complaint, and an improvement of their quality of life. After a first evaluation including objective tests (evaluating memory, executive functions, language and attention) and subjective tests (measuring cognitive complaint and quality of life), nine two-hour group sessions and an individual work to be completed at home were proposed to seven patients whose cognitive impairments were minor. Two months after the end of this workshop, a second evaluation in order to analyze the effect of the intervention and their satisfaction was proposed. Thereby, we were able to partially validate all of our hypotheses and confirm that our intervention had a positive effect on the CRCIs, reducing the cognitive complaint for the benefit of a better quality of life. Patients considered this workshop useful and enjoyable. With these results, it seems essential that this type of care be systematically offered to women suffering from or having had breast cancer. The medical staff’s awareness is then essential in order to roll out this experience in a routine way.
