Effets d'une formation du personnel à l’allaitement maternel sur la prise en charge et la santé des nouveau-nés

Abstract : Context: despite the many known benefits of breastfeeding, its rate in France is still one of the lowest in Europe. The few days spent in the maternity are key regarding the initiation of breastfeeding. However, we observe a significant stop rate when mothers leave the hospital. We wanted to observe if a professional continuing training could improve breastfeeding support in the maternity Port Royal. Objectives: the main objective of this study was to assess the evolution in breastfeeding support practices before and two years after the start of a professional continuing training. Population and method: we realized a quantitative, before-after, monocentric and retrospective study including 151 mother-child couples in the first group and 152 in the second group. The population correspond to a physiological context. Results: we observed a significant breastfeeding rate raise at the end of the maternity days after the formation. The use of complementation for new borns evolved: the use of baby bottles decreased in the second group of patients in order to preserve suckling. The milk type is better stipulated in medical files and complies more with guidelines. No significant change was found regarding the outcome of maternal and neonatal complications. Conclusion: professional continuing training can improve breastfeeding initiation support. A larger study including pathological contexts would be valuable in order to quantify these improvements better.
