La littérature jeunesse comme levier d’apprentissage en sciences au cycle 1

Abstract : Whether used for simple reading or as a medium for a finer study, children’s literature occupies a prime place within classrooms and particularly in kindergarten. To report potential positive effects of using a picture book in a science learning sequence, an experimentation was conducted with two classes of second year of kindergarten school. One of the groups -from disadvantaged backgrounds- attended a learning sequence about masses based on a book while the other group - from privileged backgrounds – attended a similar sequence but without book. Concerning the understanding of the physical phenomena involved, results do not show a significant difference between the two groups. On the other hand, we note a slightly higher performance level in the group with picture book for handling and reading the scale. In sum, the use of a children’s literature book seems to have enabled pupils to acquire skills and knowledge about masses and maybe has facilitated pupil learning. In order to attest to this last point, we should consider an experimentation with two groups from the same socio-economic backgrounds.
