Usage de protoxyde d’azote au sein d’une population d’étudiants en Médecine : état des lieux de la consommation, recherche de facteurs associés à cette consommation : stress lié au travail et usage problématique d’autres substances

Abstract : Background: a high prevalence of nitrous oxide (N2O) use among medical students is suspected. Through its anxiety-inducing action, the use of N2O could reflect a strategy for managing work-related stress. The uses associated with N2O could be problematic. Objectives: the main objective was to describe the levels of use of N2O by medical Residents. The secondary objectives were to seek an association between the frequency of N2O use and the intensity of work-related stress, as well as an association with problematic use of other substances. Methods: cross-sectional survey. N2O users were classified according to their frequency of use. Problematic substance use was assessed by adapting the DETA questionnaire, the intensity of work-related stress by the Internal Medicine Residency Stress Scale. Results: the response rate was 26.1% (165/633). 77.0% (n = 127) had previously used N2O. The prevalence of N2O use in the past 12 months was 49.1% (n = 81), of which 9.9% (n = 8) were regular users. One student (<1%) appeared to have problematic use of N2O. 39.6% of users reported adverse effects; 41.1% were not aware of the risk of an accident. The frequency of N2O use was not associated with the intensity of work-related stress. The frequency of N2O usewas associated with problematic use of other substances (p = 0.0005). Conclusion: the prevalence of N2O use is high among medical students. Problematic use remains rare. The prevalence of adverse effects and the lack of knowledge were importants underline need for risk reduction. The use of N2O may indicate problematic use of other substances.
