Apprendre les lettres en grande section de maternelle : le rôle du corps

Abstract : The aim of this study is to study the most effective way of teaching cursive letter writing to pupils in the last year of nursery school. Should teaching be conducted with the use of paper and pencil ? by tracing with the arm the letters in the air ? or by using the arm and by walking on the contour of the letters on the ground ? We assert a hypothesis, that the arm-body condition is more efficient than the arm condition and that the arm condition is more efficient than the paper-and-pencil condition. To check these hypotheses, trainee school-teachers, in collaboration with UGA teacher-researchers, carried out an experiment with 152 students divided into 12 classes at the Académie de Grenoble. It was a question of teaching the pupils a series of 6 letters according to one of the three conditions (paper-pencil / arm / arm-body). To estimate the impact of these conditions, we have offered exercises on the recognition of letters, the writing of dictated letters, copy of letters and knowledge of the names of letters and we compared the results obtained before and after teaching.
