État des lieux des connaissances et des pratiques de dépistage et de diagnostic de la dépression de l’adolescent par les médecins généralistes dans les Landes

Abstract : Objective: the prevalence of adolescent depression stands between 4% and 8% and can have a major impact on both development and health. Identifying this disorder is an important public health issue in which the general practitioner is an essential link. The main objective of our study is to establish the level of knowledge, practices and expectations of general practitioners regarding the screening and diagnosis of depression in adolescents. Method: self-employed general practitioners located in the area of the Mont de Marsan medico-psychosocial centre for adolescents were included in the study. This study is based on results obtained from a questionnaire sent to each of the doctors on 09/11/2019 by mail. Data was collected from 09/11/2019 to 29/02/2020. Results: the major warning signs of depression can often be identified by practitioners but symptoms are only understood well by one-third of those sampled. The identification of these signs appears to be influenced by; the completion of prior training for adolescent depression, the performance of a systematic clinical examination, the involvement of the doctor as a university intern supervisor or knowledge of the epidemiology of adolescent depression. The diagnostic criteria for depression are not well understood, however the diagnosis rate increases where practitioners have; received prior training on adolescent depression, performed a role as a university intern supervisor, expressed an affinity with the adolescent population, performed a two-step consultation or witnessed the prevalence of adolescent depression. Conclusion: the knowledge of general practitioners regarding screening for adolescent depression appears satisfactory, while difficulties can increase at the diagnosis stage. The knowledge and practices of doctors depend on several factors that have been identified as potential areas for improving the management of adolescent mental health problems.
