EPS et représentations, les stéréotypes sexués et la motivation des élèves dans l’activité ski de fond

Abstract : The aim of the proposed study is to show whether there is an influence of the gender stereotype conveyed by the cross-country skiing activity on student motivation and under what conditions the role of the teacher has a positive impact on this motivation. The theory of selfdetermination (Ryan and Deci, 1985, 2000, 2002) and the work of Vallerand and Crouzet (2001), among others, have shown that self-determined motivation promotes student engagement, enjoyment, and success. The work of Chalabaev and Sarrazin (2009) and Lentillon (2009) in particular has shown that physical activities can have sexual connotations. Other work has also shown that there is a link between gender stereotypes and student motivation. Our experiment was carried out on 7 students in 4th class in college during a learning sequence in cross-country skiing. We observed their motivation and their level of self-determination over the course of the sessions thanks to learning situations that fostered motivation and tested the teacher's impact on the students' motivation. We related these observations to the gendered connotations that students attributed to this activity and their feelings about it. We also surveyed a sample of adults to compare the gendered connotations of the activity for students and adults in society. The results did not show a link between gender stereotypes and student motivation in cross-country skiing. The results did, however, show that the role of the teacher was more positive on the motivation of girls and on the motivation of students with a high level of self-determination. We can think that the fact of having been a female teacher influenced this and helped to motivate the girls.
