Perceptions et émotions de patients diabétiques de type 2 concernant leur diabète pendant le premier confinement : netnographie de groupes de discussion Facebook

Abstract : Introduction: the first lockdown of COVID-19 had a significant emotional and psychosocial impact on people. This study questions the particular impact felt by type 2 diabetics through their exchanges on social networks. Methods: netnography of perceptions and emotions related to diabetes based on the grounded theory, using a double-coding method, on messages published on two Facebook group between March 17 and May 31, 2020. Results: 992 posts and 29837 comments were collected. Two themes, divided into categories, emerged. “Living with diabetes” was characterized by the ease and mental strain associated with diabetes. Ease, promoted by diabetes control and perceived support, was associated with positive emotions. Mental load, caused by suffering, loss of control, individual differences, stress and the involvement of loved ones, was associated with negative emotions. "Situation assessment" was characterized by the primary feeling, the cognitive assessment, and the actions or changes being considered. The primary feeling, related to perceived danger and stress, was associated with negative emotions. The cognitive assessment was mixed: the perception of intrinsic and extrinsic difficulties was associated with negative emotions while the perception of supportive resources was associated with positive emotions. Planning for action (going on with their lives, seeking safety and challenging) was linked mainly to positive emotions. Discussion: each theme was associated with conflicting perceptions and emotions. This study provides a perspective on the needs and expectations of type 2 diabetics during first confinement. These results could be linked to the use of social networks.
