L’aidant de proche en perte d’autonomie : l’enjeu d’une offre qui doit répondre à d’indicibles besoins

Abstract : Invisible, for a long time unregarded but nevertheless essential actors of the everyday life of vulnerable people, informal caregivers are precious supports in providing daily life care for their relatives. While progress has been made in this area, it will only be achieved in the light of painless recognition and an understandable and accessible system. This issue is not just about caregivers, because supporting them means supporting our elders and, as a result, each and every one of us. For too long, informal caregivers have been left out of the elderly care equation. Compared to non-caregivers, they present increased risks of mortality as well as psychological and physical co-morbidity which makes it a public health issue. It is clear that we are facing a critical public health issue. So, we can ask : what are the solutions and how to make them accessible ? The present study aimed at exploring the needs of family caregivers of elderly people and how assistance to carers respond to it. This qualitative and descriptive study focuses on the point of view of the main people affected by this problem: family caregivers. It leads us to a question : what are the needs of family caregivers and does the territory respond to those expectations ? Thirty-two caregivers of elderly people living at home were recruited. Four semi-structured interviews were conducted, and twenty eight responded to a survey. Also, seven professionals were interviewed. The outcome of this work focused on reflection around various recommendations with regard to a health promotion approach.
