Accoucher en maison de naissance : motivations des femmes et expérience de l’accompagnement global à la naissance

Abstract : Background: Couples want an alternative to hospital care when it comes to birth. Birth centers are experienced in France, allowing to combine personalized support and safety, thanks to midwifery one-to-one care. Objectives: This work’s goal was to show women’s motives to give birth in a birth center, and to describe their experience of this type of follow-up. Methods: A descriptive and interpretative qualitative study was conducted. Six women were interviewed: four pregnant women who wanted to give birth in a birth center, and two women who had already given birth in a birth center . Findings and discussion: Women want a personalized follow-up, that respects the father’s place, support from a known professional during delivery, and respect for they choices. The birth center can respect the intimate nature of birth while the proximity of the emergency room gives some security. Several studies show that respecting choices and continuous support are vital regarding birth experience. Furthermore, french and european birth centers have a similar safety level. Conclusion: Informing future parents about the birth places available needs to be a priority so they can to freely choose what is best for them. Generalizing birth centers to the whole country is necessary to meet couples’ requests.
