Recherche de sensation et traumatisme psychique en population militaire, une revue narrative de la littérature

Abstract : Sensation seeking is a "personality trait caracterized by the need for experiences and for new, various and complex sensations, and by the will to engage in hazardous physical and social activities, experiences sought for themselves" (Zuckerman, 1994). Regarding the recurrence of this personality trait in psychotraumatized military population, it raises the question of explanatory leads on psychobiological and psychopathological levels of these sensation seeking behaviours found in these servicemen, and of its role as a part of PTSD adjustement. Indeed, PTPD (post traumatic psychological disorders) remain a central focus in the ministry of defense's action plan, aiming as one of its priorities the "reinforcement of sensitization and prevention actions of servicemen and their families". The aim and intention of proposing this paper, is to highlight this phenomenom's significance to benefit from it, pre and post trauma. The first part of this work offers to appraise the actual situation regarding current knowledge on the HSS personality trait. In the second part, we will focus on a literary review about the influence of HSS character, in terms of adaptation, in stress exposure and TSPT development. Lastly, a third part will be dedicated to an analysis of common pitfalls surrounding the SS concept. Forty six articles referring to our topic have been identified. The HSS personality trait seems to offer to individuals featuring it, a capacity to resist stress and show resilience from PTSD by using active adapatation strategies, replacing the individual at the center and as an actor of its own survival. These encouraging results must be confirmed by larger clinical studies, but can already provide us today, through better knowledge and recognition of our servicemen's health, some work leads for military and/or psychotraumatized populations.
