Accessibilité et compréhension par les sourds de la campagne d’information de santé publique durant l’épidémie de Covid-19

Abstract : Background: the SarsCov2 epidemic has involved a massive information campaign for the general public, requiring accessibility to the largest number. The communication of the preventive actions to be adopted was a central point of this strategy to contain the epidemic. The deaf population is known for their high illiteracy rate and low health literacy. We wanted to assess the accessibility and understanding of the information campaign on the Covid19 health crisis among the deaf population, based on 2 adapted supports. Method: this is a qualitative study by semi-directed interviews with a diverse sample of Deaf speakers of French Sign Language (FSL), conducted in the patient's language of life, with the help of a qualified interpreter (SLI). A video and a poster from Santé Publique France were presented. Results: the FSL made it easier to understand the messages. The Deaf people questioned understood the preventive actions to be adopted, thanks to the prevention TV spots broadcast continuously, but remain cautious about understanding for a population with a heterogeneous FSL level. The presence of SLI during official government speeches was very much appreciated, and contributed to the good follow-up of the crisis and isolation instructions. Video spots with FSL are preferred to posters, whose drawings and texts can lead to misunderstandings. The use of written material should be limited and replaced by simple and visual messages. Conclusion: the specific adaptations to be made for the Deaf to inform them without misunderstanding are close to the model of universal communication which tends to be developed for a wider public.
