Vécu et difficultés des professionnels vis-à-vis de l'IVG médicamenteuse extra-hospitalière dans le Calvados

Abstract : Introduction: In France, doctors and midwives may practice medical abortion out of the hospital, up to seven weeks amenorrhea, since 2004 and 2016. In 2020, only a few professionals realised this efficient method. The aim of this study was to explore the experience and the difficulties faced by the professionals already practicing this method in the Calvados. Method: Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 14 professionals practicing medical abortion out of hospital in Calvados, and three who were not practicing after following a medical abortion training. Results: Although expressing a lack of gratefulness, the professionals who were led to this practice out of activism, were satisfied by the service they provided. The women were offered an alternative to hospital, with a comprehensive care specifically organised but time-consuming and requiring multi-professional contacts. Complications were rare and the various difficulties in practicing (particularly psychologic) weren't holding the professionals back. Absenteeism at check-up consultation and accessibility to ultrasound might be problematic. Conclusion: To achieve important provision of care throughout all the territory, doctors and midwives need to be better informed about this practice opportunity. Meetings with those already carrying out a medical abortion could convince them to set up this activity.
