Comment se construit la décision de contraindre en psychiatrie : ce qu’en disent les psychiatres

Abstract : Coercion is a tool used in psychiatry when the psychic state of a patient is considered relevant to urgent care, the patient refuses care and that respecting the refusal would be more harmful for the patient than to impose this. that the doctor deems necessary. Behind this simple definition, in fact, there is a whole process leading to a decision to compel or not. This decision is made in a particular doctor-patient relationship where the patient's ability to decide for himself and the competition of non-reconcilable ethical values is assessed. To explore the justifications of psychiatrists in the decision to constrain and explain the ethical issues that accompany this decision-making process, we conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with psychiatrists who regularly perform restraint measures.
