Déterminants de la réalisation d’une formation aux gestes de premiers secours par la population majeure d'Ille-et-Vilaine : freins, motivations, et attentes vis-à-vis de leur médecin généraliste, une étude qualitative

Abstract : Background : First aid training is lacking in France. This results in lower chances of survival for the victims, especially in the case of cardiopulmonary arrest. Aims : We aimed to qualitatively explore the factors influencing first aid training implementation and evaluate the role of the general practitioner. Methods : Fourteen adults living in Ille-et-Vilaine were included via an online survey deployed as part of a joint quantitative study, conducted by Clémentine Riflart. Semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted between April and June 2020. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed by two researchers using thematic analysis. Results : This study highlighted how important first aid skills and training are in the overall population. Obstacles to carrying out training have been identified, including lack of solicitation, lack of availability, training costs and fear of emergency situations. Among the desired solicitations, work-based training was the one that received the most support. It was suggested that training should be made mandatory. Children's training in the school setting was widely approved. The participants stressed the lack of exposure of the trainings and the need of repeated prevention campaigns. Few participants had envisioned their general practitioner in this setting. The implementation of information in the waiting room, and a minimal advice for targeted populations, were nevertheless considered relevant and appropriate. Conclusions : Actions are being implemented to extend first aid training but appear to be insufficient. The general practitioner could be involved in first aid training information and promotion, particularly by providing minimal advice.
