Description clinique et biologique de la population pédiatrique atteinte de la dengue à La Réunion durant l’épidémie de 2019

Abstract : Background: Dengue infection is the fastest spreading mosquito-borne viral disease in tropical and subtropical countries. Millions are infected with dengue yearly. Reunion Island had large dengue outbreaks in recent years. Objectives: To describe the clinical and biological characteristics of pediatric patients infected with dengue fever in Réunion. To identify possible risk factors, warning signs or protective factors for the occurrence of severe dengue fever in order to promote optimal management. Methods: Monocentric retrospective cohort study including dengue fever cases retrieved from databases at the University Hospital of Reunion Island between January and June 2019. Results: 1594 patients were included in our retrospective cohort study. Fifty-two children and 795 adults were laboratory confirmed. A dengue-related rash was the only sign (p = 0.015) that was more common in children than in adults OR=2.41 95% CI (1.53-3.82). Compared to adults, children had less arthralgia (p < 0.001) and myalgia (p = 0.016). Very few severe dengue cases were detected in children, no death was recorded Conclusion: Reunion Island is still an epidemic zone. Very few severe cases and no death was reported in children compared to studies conducted in endemic zones.
