Syndrome du bébé secoué : étude observationnelle des caractéristiques des enfants pris en charge pour un syndrome du bébé secoué

Abstract : Objective: To provide an overview of the characteristics found in children treated for Shaken Baby Syndrome. Material and method: This is a descriptive observational monocentric study carried out at the « Hôpital Couple Enfant » in Grenoble in which are included all the children treated for Shaken Baby Syndrome during the last eight years. Results: The sample of 38 children was composed mainly of boys under 12 months of age, premature babies, children from multiple pregnancies and children who were their parents’ firstborn chil. They were mostly cared for by their parents or a childminder at the time of the onset of the symptoms, and most of them lived in a blended family. The clinical picture on arrival at the emergency room was aspecific and imaging showed that all had lesions. The majority of them had sequelae at discharge. Conclusion: The Grenoble sample has similar characteristics to those found in the literature. Many elements must be taken into account and no single element can confirm the risk of SBS or even its diagnosis. Prevention of SBS could focus on information about the physiology of crying in newborns, support for parenthood and relay through prevention programs adapted to each caregiver. The midwife would have a role to play in each aspect of this prevention.
