Représentations des violences obstétricales par les étudiants en sante, internes de gynécologie-obstétrique et étudiants sages-femmes

Abstract : Objectives: Recognizing the representations of midwifery students and interns in obstetrics and gynaecology regarding obstetrical violence; identifying how this subject is introduced during their studies; defying the most relevant improvements that can be made in order to have a better understanding of this problematic as a professional. Methodology: This is a sociological and qualitative investigation was conducted by semi-structured interviews with fourth-year midwifery students and interns in obstetrics and gynaecology. It took place in the medical and maieutic university of the South East of France. This study participants were recruited on a voluntary basis. Each interview was conducted using an interview guide previously constructed. Interviews were recorded in order to be precisely transcribed and analysed afterwards. Results: The interviewed students have different opinions on the mediatization of obstetrical violence. Regarding their knowledge on this subject, the definitions that were given are similar to those issued by the highest authorities, although they have rarely heard of it during their studies. For them, it’s a very subjective concept to which each person may have different representations about, depending on the context, the emergency, the gender, the social characteristics, the generation, etc. Finally, obstetrical violence are rarely approached during their studies, only through the topic of consent and the relational aspect of the caregiver-patient relationship. A difference can be observed between the studies of interns and midwifery students. The students suggest, at their level, many areas for improvement that they think should be implemented in order to improve care. Conclusion: Obstetrical students have different images of obstetrical violence. This small-scale approach could be deepened in terms of sociological analysis and enriched by a more important population-based study.
