Enquêter pendant la Révolution. Les enquêtes pénales des juges de paix à Caen sous le Directoire (1795-1799)

Abstract : The political regime of the Directory (1794-1799) distinguishes between administrative police and judicial police. From this conceptual review, the index police acquire a penal code and a legally coherent area to investigate. This research thesis attempts to understand how criminal investigations were carried out under the Directory in Caen. What are the legal limits of investigators? Their practices? Their targets? Their actors? The justices of the peace, head of the judicial police, direct the investigation files and rely on actors and local networks to carry out their mission. New police knowledge and techniques are being put in place and will gradually establish an organized police force, working within the framework of precise and new criminal law.
