Surcharge pondérale et programme combinant renforcement musculaire et marche nordique : effet de l’intensité en marche nordique sur les capacités fonctionnelles et la santé perçue

Abstract : Objective : to evaluate the effect of the intensity of a program combining nordic walking and resistance training on the functional capacities and perceived health of obese and overweight people. Method : 8 overweight or obese patients (BMI IM : 32,5 ; BMI IV : 31,5) aged 55 to 72 years participated in this 10-week study, 4 of whom were in the IM group and 4 in the IV group. Waist circumference, functional capacities (walking and cardiorespiratory with the 2 km walk test and its equation to estimate VO2 max, muscular with the sit to stand test, and UQAM YMCA questionnaire) and perceived health (SPHQ questionnaire) as well as adherence were evaluated before and after the program. Results : functional capacities increased more in the IV group (walking IV : + 7,3% ; cardiorespiratory IV : + 12,8% ; muscular IV : + 30,1%). Self-assessment of functional capacities increased more in the IV group with a decrease in the frailty score (frailty IV : - 27,8%). Waist circumference and perception of health status improved more in the IM group (waist circumference IM : -3% ; health status IM : + 13,3%). Adherence seemed similar for both groups with lower adherence for the vigorous intensity group (adherence IM : 72,5% ; adherence IV : 70%). Conclusion : the practice of nordic walking at high intensity associated with resistance training seems to present more benefits on functional capacities of obese and overweight subjects in comparison with a lower intensity which seems to present more benefits on the waist circumference and the perception of health.
