Quels sont les représentations, motivations et freins face à la prévention scolaire chez les enfants à La Réunion ?

Abstract : Importance: The incidence of cutaneous melanoma is increasing on the in Reunion island, thus joining the highest incidence worldwide. The main risk factor for melanoma is exposure during childhood, yet sun prevention remains insufficient in schools in Reunion island. Objectives: to explore the representations, obstacles and motivations facing sun protection among the children in Reunion island. Method: Qualitative study with semi-structured individual interviews among 14 primary school children. The data were collected from September 2019 to November 2020. The theoretical sufficiency of the data was investigated. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded, analyzed and then modeled using the principle of grounded theorization. Results: All 14 participants expressed their protective habits, which varied according to exposure. Protection was less during daily activities including school time. The children noted the lack of resources by inadequate infrastructure. The practical constraints were identified, often related to the discomfort of the methods. A lack of prevention regarding sun protection concerning adults including parents and teachers was relieved. Conclusion and relevance: Sun protection for children in schools is both school, parental and social responsibility. There was less protection during daily activities which would have to be deconstructed. The best means of protection were the automatisms ingrained amond children, acquired thanks to parental education mostly but still insufficient. It would therefore appear interesting to involve teachers more actively in the photoprotection of children at school, by improving the modes of communication between schools and parents and by extending prevention to families, and not only to the child himself.
