La vie quotidienne en plaine de Lyon au XVIIIe siècle d’après les inventaires après-décès

Abstract : Under the Ancien Régime, the rural population dominated by far in the kingdom of France. Women and men who try day after day to meet their most basic needs. Everyday gestures that each of us performs automatically every day. However, in the 18th century, living in decent conditions was far from easy. Having a roof over your head, a quiet place to sleep, furniture to store your things, eat your fill, provide for your family or even dress is far from being experienced in the same way by all individuals, in a society that remains deeply unequal. The history of rural people is too often to be neglected in favor of urbanites. Just as studies of the everyday life of ordinary people have for many years been looked down upon by historians who did not find them worthy of interest. Things have changed a lot since then and the history of material culture has become a field of research in its own right. It is from this postulate that we aim to deal with everyday life in the plain of Lyon in the 18th century. A study rooted in the rural world, but under urban influence, the city of Lyon being very close. It is therefore a question of detecting the possible impact of the city on the living environment of rural people. To do this, we will discuss different facets of the daily life of these individuals such as housing, furniture, food, clothing and writings. In order to carry out our investigation, we will rely on post-death inventories, a source of choice for understanding the daily life of past societies.
