Évaluation à 6 mois de l’impact d’une formation à la relation thérapeutique sur l’empathie des externes

Abstract : Background: empathy is a key element of patient-physician communication which positively influences patients' health. The decline in empathy at the beginning of the practical phase of the training has been described as a concern. Specific interventions targeted at increasing medical student’s empathy are developed to remedy this decline. Purpose: this longitudinal study is designed to evaluate the evolution of 4th year French medical students' empathy after a diversified training, including theorical class, Balint groups, role plays and OSCE. Methods: empathy levels were measured using the French medical student version of the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (JSPE-MS) at the start and the end of the teaching and then 6 months after. The study was conducted on matched data from 110 medical students. The primary endpoint was the mean difference obtained at JSPE-MS between the three assessment times. The analyzes were done by Student tests. Results: results on the matched cohort indicated that with this teaching, medical students' empathy did not change significantly during the 4th year and the six months that followed. Conclusion: our study showed that training combining different teaching techniques seems to stabilize the empathy of medical students throughout this training and the following 6 months instead of an expected spontaneous decrease.
