Activité physique, comportement sédentaires et grossesse : connaissances, conseils et sentiment de compétence des sages-femmes. Étude descriptive et interprétative de type qualitative menée auprès de 11 sages-femmes de la région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Abstract : Background: The 21st century is marked by an increase of time spent adopting sedentary behaviors. Maternity appears as a barrier for women to continue or start a physical activity. However, many benefits have been proven and midwives, through their skills of prevention and information to women, are key persons concerning the promotion of physical activity during pregnancy. Objective: To assess the perception of midwives of their skills concerning physical activity and sedentary behaviors during pregnancy; to study their knowledge, advice given on the subject and the adaptation of their speech; to highlight the barriers and needs necessary to promote physical activity during pregnancy. Method: A descriptive and interpretative qualitative study was conducted based on semi-structured interviews which permitted to collect the testimonies of eleven midwives from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Results and Discussion: Midwives in this study are aware of the benefits provided by physical activity during pregnancy. They feel competent to provide advice and information concerning prevention. However, many midwives feel that it’s difficult to coach some specific profiles of patients. The study highlighted many obstacles and needs of these perinatal professionals in order to promote physical activity during pregnancy. Conclusion: Although a positive development in terms of the topic should be noted, the awareness of professionals still seems insufficient. Therefore, it is essential to persevere in the formation of perinatal professionals and to meet their needs, in order to give them the keys to promote physical activity during pregnancy.
