Hypercholestérolémie et utilisation traditionnelle du Bois de pêche marron (Psiloxylon mauritianum) à l’Île de La Réunion

Abstract : Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number one cause of death in the world. It is therefore essential to prevent, control and improve the care of these diseases. Hypercholesterolemia is one of the risk factors for developing CVD. The first line treatment for all hypercholesterolemia is the introduction of dietary hygiene rules, which involve the adoption of a healthy diet and regular physical activity. When these measures are not sufficient, and in the presence of several risk factors (hypertension, obesity, etc.), a drug treatment may be considered. In the first instance, statins are prescribed, but this kind of treatment is not always well tolerated by patients, who are forced to suspend their medication because of side effects (muscular or hepatic). Some patients consequently turn to alternative medicines, such as phytotherapy. In Reunion Island, the local flora is very rich, and patients are very attached to the Reunionese Pharmacopoeia. Many of them use plants to treat their pathologies. The Bigaignon wood (Psiloxylon mauritianum) is an endemic tree of Reunion Island and Mauritius, it belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is a plant traditionally used for its depurative properties. The leaves of Bigaignon wood contain monoterpenes and flavonoids. These active compounds could help to reduce blood cholesterol levels.
