Élaboration d'un référentiel de compétences pour une consultation éducative en odontologie pédiatrique

Abstract : Dental caries are a public health problem from childhood. The oral care of these children sometimes requires an intervention under general anesthesia. The risk factors, mostly preventable, and the frequency of recurrences after treatment can lead to this pathology being considered a chronic disease. Therapeutic Patient Education is a program designed to help patients develop or maintain the skills they need to best manage their lives with chronic disease. Thus, the idea of combining caries disease, with the concept of TPE seems interesting. Objective: the objective of our study was to develop a competence framework for children from 4 to 6 years old having dental treatment planned under general anesthesia and their families. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with eight hospital and private pediatric dentists. Results: pediatric dentists were in favor of developing a multi-session educational program that would be integrated into curative management. The notion of competence development of patients and their families was unfamiliar to most practitioners who instead described the knowledge that patients and their families should acquire. Conclusion: An educational program appears to be a complementary program to the curative care of young children to guarantee good long-term oral health.
