Analyse lexicologique diachronique du profil phonosémantique des monomorphèmes en gr- dans l’Oxford English Dictionary

Abstract : This empirical study reports the diachronic behaviour of gr- monomorphemes in the Oxford English Dictionary. It aims at tracing back the semantic profile of the phonestheme gr- from lexicographic data. The methodology relies on a keyword-based statistical analysis across lexical entries, in order to single out a handful of distinctive phonosemantic features that are associated with the submorphemic onset. An examination of the metasemic changes of a limited number of features, as well as an analysis of the etymological roots which the lexemes of the corpus stem from were also conducted. The results point at a core subsemantic feature associated with a notion of negatives emotions. This feature seems to be followed by less statistically attested features, associated with the notions of sound and unpleasant sensations, which carry metasemic relations with the latter. Metasemic and etymological data hint at a typology of subsemantic features, since some of them seem to be associated with a more limited number of roots, a less diverse metasemic profile, as well as a smaller number of words whose origin is said to be iconic.
