The Colin Kaepernick Case : A Study of African American Athletes Activism and Patriotism in American Sports

Abstract

In this Master’s Thesis I studied the case of Colin Kaepernick, an African American football player who knelt during the national anthem to denounce police brutality against people of color in the United States. This paper gives an account of what happened then discusses the place of Kaepernick in black athletes activism history, the form he gave to his own activism and the relationship between football and US sports in general with patriotism. I also discuss the rules a teacher of the French National Education has to follow regarding the mention of politics and societal issues in class and the particularity of modern language classes. Especially English teachers who will be led to mention foreign politics in their class, as would be the occurrence if they were to talk about the Colin Kaepernick case.
