La discussion à visée philosophique au service du climat scolaire

Abstract : Can the philosophically-oriented discussion help students develop their social abilities? This dissertation aims at answering this question. Working with a class in which there were several tensions questioned us on one of the drivers of action which could improve a negative school climate. Can philosophically-oriented discussions help students answer essential questions? Can they help students develop their moral judgment, thought as a will to administer justice, according to L. Kohlberg? What psychosocial skills are used by students during philosophically-oriented discussions? What impact are they going to have on school climate, and on the students’ perceptions of « community life »? To what extent can philosophically-oriented discussions transform the relationships between students in a classroom, and at school? Four philosophically-oriented workshops allowed us to answer these questions. However, the results have to be carefully qualified, because other factors besides philosophically-oriented discussions can also justify the achieved results. Lastly, these philosophically-oriented workshops need to be a long-term exercise, if we want to achieve results.
