Collaborateurs et collaboratrices des milieux populaires dans le département du Rhône sous l'occupation

Abstract : For a long time, historical studies on collaboration were assimilated to the history of the Vichy regime. It was not until the early 1970s that the American political scientist Stanley Hoffmann chose to focus specifically on state collaboration and the collaborationist political parties. Subsequently, historians such as Robert O. Paxton, took up this subject to assert that it was indeed the French state that wished to collaborate with the Germans. At the same time, the best-known and most extreme collaborators were analysed by many French historians. It was not until the beginning of the 1990s that this political vision of collaboration gave way to a more social, popular and gendered dimension, notably with the work of Pierre Laborie, Henry Rousso, François Rouquet and Fabrice Virgili. Thus, local studies are emerging in order to understand the specificities of a given department or town by looking at the individual and collective behaviour of men and women who collaborated. This is why this dissertation is in line with the historiography of the last thirty years by seeking to explore the notion of the 'ordinary' individual, evoking men and women from the middle or working classes, which it is possible to see in the work of some historians. To this end, the working class is the subject of a specific study within the Rhône department, which turns out to be a region with a large proportion of modest occupations and a strong presence of Germans and collabos. Consequently, the question is whether many working-class people collaborated and why they chose to work for a German authority.
