Prise en charge des urgences bucco-dentaires en navigation hauturière, évaluation des pratiques auprès d’une population amatrice et professionnelle de la voile

Abstract : Introduction: just like earthlings, sailors can develop oral pathologies, however a major constraint appears in this type of population: isolation. The management of a dental emergency at sea will therefore have to be adapted to the environment in which the sailor evolves, but also take into account different components, namely the equipment available on board but also the skills of the patient. In this context, we wondered if the modalities for dealing with dental emergencies during offshore sailing were known and applied by the amateur and professional sailing public. Methods: we conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study to evaluate the practices of sailing professionals and amateurs by distributing a questionnaire within the Club nautique de la marine de Toulon and the Pôle Finistère de course au large over the period from 25/09/2020 to 28/12/2020. Results: 77 participations were processed and analyzed. Discussion: we were able to observe that certain means of prevention were not sufficiently used, such as consulting a dentist in the 6 months preceding a departure, or that progress still needed to be made in order to homogenize the contents of the first-aid kits. Medical care is limited due to the impossibility of consulting a dental surgeon directly at the time of the emergency, however the technological development we are experiencing correlated with the development of telemedicine both allow a clear improvement of the interviews. Conclusion: it would be interesting to increase the awareness of the seafarer population in order to decrease the number of dental emergencies at sea by using the preventive methods we know, but also to increase the awareness of the tools and protocols available to contact the emergency services.
