Ergothérapie et techniques de thérapies non-médicamenteuses auprès de personnes âgées souffrant de troubles neuro-cognitifs majeurs (TNCM)

Abstract : Background: Currently, no scientific study demonstrates the role and the effectiveness of non-pharmacological therapies (NPT) to take care of patients with Alzheimer’s disease at home. The purpose of this study was to determine if these non-pharmacological therapies can help to reduce behavior disorder and, therefore help elderly people with dementia to return home. Methods: Eight occupational therapists participated in this study. There were two criteria of participation. The participants must have worked with people suffering from dementia and they must have taken care of at least one of these patients back home. I have carried out interviews to see how occupational therapists work in their daily life. Results: The majority of occupational therapists interviewed used these NPT in order to reduce behavior disorder and it worked. In addition, every participant said that they create links with the caregivers and sometimes teach them how to use non-pharmacological therapies at home. Conclusion: The study showed that sometimes, NPT techniques can reduce behavior disorders for elderly people who suffer from dementia. Furthermore, teaching this technique to the caregivers may be a solution to create a link between the hospitalization and home care, but it is still little practiced.
