La contraception d’urgence chez les femmes ayant recours à une IVG : qu’en savent-elles ? Étude observationnelle multicentrique préliminaire

Abstract : Objective: to assess the knowledge of women seeking abortion about emergency contraception and the factors influencing this knowledge. Methods: multicenter preliminary observational study conducted in the orthogenetic centers of the hospitals of Grasse, Cannes, Antibes and Nice between October 14, 2020 and January 15, 2021. A questionnaire was distributed to seventy patients presenting for a pre or post abortion consultation. Results: a total of 89% of women who had undergone an induced abortion knew about emergency contraception, but there were significant gaps in their knowledge. Only 6% of patients knew the maximum time of use, 46% of patients had a "poor" level of knowledge and only 14% of patients had a "very good" level. The factors influencing this level of knowledge were their level of education (p=0.002), nationality (p=0.008) and reliability of information sources (p=0.1). Prescription of emergency contraception in advance is still not widely used (for 10% of them). Most unwanted pregnancies occurred as a result of incorrect use of contraception (73%: forgetting to take the pill, unsystematic use, stopping contraception without wanting to become pregnant) and the main barrier to the use of emergency contraception was the lack of awareness of pregnancy (47%). Conclusion: it is important to develop information for patients on contraceptive failure, what to do if they forget it, and on their fertility. Health professionals seem to be the best source of information. During postabortion consultations, the proper use of contraception and emergency contraception should be discussed in depth.
