Implants courts versus implants standards : une revue de la littérature

Abstract : The aim of this study was to perform a review of the literature of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the outcomes of short dental implants (≤7 mm) versus those of standard dental implants (>7 mm) with or without vertical bone augmentation. In total, twenty-three RCTs were included and analyzed to evaluate the reliability of short implants. Two RCTs showed a higher survival rate in the standard implants group than in the short implants group. In the other studies, no significant differences in survival rates were found. In seven RCTs significant differences were observed in terms of marginal bone level (MBL) changes, in favor of short implants which showed a lower resorption. Notwithstanding, all the studies showed very satisfying MBLs in the standard and the short groups. Short implants caused significantly less complications than standard implants, especially concerning iatrogenic complications. No significant differences between the two groups were observed in terms of probing depth, bleeding on probing, plaque control or implant stability. In conclusion, short implants appear to be a reliable alternative to standard ones in the rehabilitation of the atrophic alveolar ridge but, more studies are needed to confirm this reliability in the long term.
