Évaluation de la connaissance de leurs traitements chroniques des personnes âgées de plus de 65 ans

Abstract : Introduction: Related to polypathology, the elderly are often polymedicated. Insufficient knowledge of their treatments occurs to non-compliance and iatrogenic risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate treatments knowledge on elderly patients. Methods: This prospective study evaluated the knowledge of their treatments of 152 elderly patient aged 65 years or over consulting outpatient and taking at least one chronic treatment. The questionnaire assessed names, indication and frequencies knowledge, thereby providing a knowledge score in percentage. Socio-demographic data, factors related to the treatments and explanations asked and provided were analyzed. Results: The average number of medications per patient was 5,8. The mean percentage of knowledge of the name was 53%, of the indication 74,8%, of the frequency 79,9%. Only 26,3% of subjects knew their treatments wholly. Different factors significantly influenced this knowledge: age, socio-professional category, number of treatments, autonomy, seeking information by the patient, explanations provided by the general practitioner. Conclusion: Elderly knowledge of their treatments is insufficient. It is necessary for the various stakeholders in the care pathway to assess and improve patients’ knowledge, and this in particular during the prescription refill consultation, specific to general practice.
