Macro-geography and micro-geography of restorations of the maxillary incisors by composite resin layering

Nowadays, great attention is paid to the aesthetic dimension of the smile, which is established mainly with the vestibular surfaces of the maxillary incisors. To reproduce the natural incisor as faithfully as possible, the dentist must not only reproduce the tooth in its general shape and color but also the surface condition. Indeed, the surface’s condition plays a primordial role in the general perception of the shape, the color, and the light. This surface condition includes macro-geography and micro-geography. The practitioner must first know how to highlight these before being able to use the various tools at his disposal in the layering protocol to reproduce these surface textures and thus restore the primary, secondary and tertiary anatomy of the incisor. To obtain accurate restorations, this protocol, although reproducible, simple, and precise, will still have to be adapted to the specific character of each incisor and therefore to inter-individual variations. It will then be necessary to modify the characteristics of the shape or to use perspective effects and optical illusion methods. Thus, the reproduction of the surface condition appears to be a key element in the aesthetic integration of composite veneer restorations.
