Favoriser la volonté de communiquer en langue étrangère par les pratiques théâtrales

Abstract : A major goal of language teaching and learning is to engender in students “the willingness to seek out communication opportunities and the willingness actually to communicate in them“ (Macintyre et al., 1998). The use of theatre / drama activities in the language classroom is likely to foster willingness to communicate (WTC) in the L2, notably due to its potential effects on student self-confidence, language anxiety and group cohesion (Piazzoli, 2011; Lee et al., 2020; Asimidou et al., 2021). This study aims to determine to what extent L2 theatre and drama practice can foster willingness to communicate in the high school language classroom. The first part focuses on an English-language play, prepared during English classes over a two-month period, culminating in a series of performances in front of an audience. The second part examines a one-off drama activity integrated into a sequence of lessons. The data was collected via questionnaires, classroom observations, and teacher interviews. The results, though inconclusive, suggest that theatre/drama activities have a positive impact on willingness to communicate. Participation in the class theatre project appeared to have a significant impact on group cohesion and self-confidence, while the integration of drama into a regular sequence of lessons seemed to encourage deeper engagement with the topic and create a more playful atmosphere, thus making students more likely to speak. A more focused study, carried out over a longer period and incorporating more observational data, could provide more illuminating results.
