Re-constituer son « histoire ». Une approche anthropologique des parcours de vie des personnes « intersexuées »

Abstract : Using narratives of adults born intersexed, we attempt in the present study to show how persons build and negotiate a self definition in very diverse ways, in a context constrained by sexual norms. Intersexed persons deal with a body situated in a “borderline” position with respect to social norms, a body that medical practice tries to make more intelligible through reference to morphological normative codes, and yet, as opposed to the illusion of a permanent resolution through medical body alteration, a body liable to bring the persons back to a configuration “never completely similar to the configuration of others” at different times of their life and experience. Laying stress on the discourses and personal strategies that persons set up to re-appropriate their own “history”- whether claiming an “intersexual identity” or not – we undertake at the same time a reflexion on the epistemological and methodological stakes underlying the use of the “intersex” category.
