La sage-femme coordinatrice de la prise en charge globale du couple mère/nouveau-né en suites de couches

Abstract : Objective. To understand the satisfaction of couples and professionals about the management of care for mothers and their children during postnatal period.

Population and method. Homocentric study made in the hospital of Le Mans includes 151 patients and 53 professionals. It began on the 16th of august and finished the 22nd of October 2010.

Results. Women judge professionals' actions as positive (97.7%), reassuring (91.4%), respectful of the organization of the new family (82.8%), reactive to request (89.4%) and helpful with their parenthood (82.2%). Ninety two percent of women (91.4%) rated their hospitalization in Le Mans's hospital as positive and with a suitable time of hospitalization for 77.5% of them. As for professionals, 77.4% of them believe midwives' and nursing auxiliary's work is appreciated by the couples, and 71.7% believe being close to them. Only half the professionals rate the midwife-nursing auxiliary binomial work as efficient (49.1%) and adaptive to demands (49.1%). According to pediatricians, they regret that there is no-longer a single referent for new-born babies' cares. However, managing new- born babies' cares is part of midwives' qualifications. Therefore, there is a difference between the actual organization of pediatricians and that of the service, which can be the origin of understandable discontent. Two percent (1.9%) of professionals think there are problems in the organization of pediatricians' visits to newborns babies. Concerning information delivered about feeding, only one in two women judge them sufficient, clear and satisfying. In spite of these results, the majority of women (96%) are satisfied with the binomial work and their stay in hospital. However, one question rose from these observations, concerning number of workers in maternity which appears to be insufficient. Fifty seven percent (57.4%) of the professionals agree with it as well as 3.3% of the women (especially on week-end).

Conclusion. Couples are greatly satisfied about this new organization. Professionals' satisfaction is mixed. Some particular areas have to be improved, i.e. informations delivered to patients during their stay and the organization of the unit amongst the professionals.
