Altérité et altération dans 'American Beauty' de Sam Mendes

Abstract : This work is an analysis of the dissenting dimension of American Beauty through the theme of alteration and otherness. The film denounces a crisis within our society that threatens the stability of its individuals. The movie is not specifically focused on the quest of identity, but also on the notion of communication and exchange (oral and visual). Therefore, the question of image and perception is central. It is actually raised by the character Ricky (and his video camera). American Beauty demonstrates that creation is saving as the two characters that manage to escape their condition (and preserve their memory) are those who expose an artistic sensitivity (Ricky and Lester). The theme of art, combined with the notion of parody turns American Beauty into a satire of our western society (and not only the American society) which helds contradictory messages associating success, the beautiful with scandal and decadence.
